I hadn’t seen Joker since it came out in the cinema five years ago, so thought it was best to re-watch it before seeing the sequel tomorrow.
Not as amazing as I made it out to be, but still a really good movie. Joaquin Phoenix basically carries the film. I don’t know if it would hold up as well without him.
I really liked Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score, it’s very haunting at times especially after Arthur has killed the three boozy Wall Street youngsters and when he’s dancing in front of his admiring “followers”.
Never really bought into the idea that seemed to circulate online that Arthur Fleck was someone to look up to. Take pity on? Yes. Sympathise with? Yes. Idolise? Not sure about that one.
I was floored the first time I watched this that after all the hype going in by the filmmakers that this was a stand alone separate from any interconnected universe because this was “a real film” that we see the Waynes get killed in the alley AGAIN. Between Batman ‘89, Batman Forever, Batman Begins, Batman v Superman, and the goddamn Gotham pilot, HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO SEE THOSE PEARLS DROP AND A 10 YEAR OLD CHILD TRAUMATISED BEYOND REPAIR.
