Kurdish-Austrian director Kurdwin Ayub's story is quite unlike classic narratives about teenagers.     The film deliberately avoids giving explanations and concrete answers. There's almost no mention of the motives for the crime, since nobody’s sure about them. The director fills these gaps with cinematic expression. What effect can a story have if you first tell it methodically, showing rooms full of cold emptiness, and then tell the same story with the characters suddenly in the frame, filling this emptiness with human warmth? A battle of bare facts and artistic reality is waged between the two halves of Belonging, pointedly asking which of these is more truthful.
