Yi Yi

Yi Yi

For the same reason I love Roma, Yi Yi’s collection of seemingly insignificant moments all build towards a tapestry of one families life that feels gargantuan by the time the credits roll. It asks a lot of questions and doesn’t expect you to have the answers. It’s meditative, that’s for sure.

Because each scene’s shot composition is so basic, the camera placements are all the more vital and it’s fascinating to see where Edward Yang chooses to position the viewers. There’s a purity there in its simplicity as the shot lingers on things that seem so mundane.

I’m still not entirely sure how to feel about it but I’ll be thinking about it for a while, I know that much.
