Absolutely bold and insane. European tone with American pacing was very unusual to me. Super erotic. I would’ve loved if it was slower though, the first act is so rushed imo. It would benefit from allowing scenes to breathe because the cinematography + sound design + camp acting style all serve to create an interesting atmosphere that isn’t really felt due to the fast paced nature of its scenes.
It also has a very didactic “Psycho-esque” ending that feels a bit dated/weak to me personally. Keoghan’s character’s motivations were just a bit weak and felt poorly strung together.
Had some nice little absurd Buñuel/Pasolini moments too (dinner scene). I also literally wrote the exact same graveyard scene in a short film screenplay when I was like 17, idk if that’s a good or bad thing. That graveyard scene and many others remind me of Liberté (2019?) or a Marquis de Sade novel.
Nice exploration of the queer “Do I want him or want to be him?” theme that i’ve only ever seen in movies like The Talented Mr. Ripley, Purple Noon, and that one Sofia Takal movie (Always Shine?).
I’ve had a crush on Barry Keoghan for a while so seeing him with Jacob Elordi made me feel things…
