God-DAMN! Why haven't I heard more about this movie? This shit was excellent. Great concept, great acting, nice scares, looks amazing. The only thing I found lacking was that the little bit of the film dedicated to exposition was kind of clunky in the way it was written -- I mean the cheery prostitute just stopping by to drop some history? And the three actors they chose for the Manson-like Family were guilty of overacting the crazy. But that's it. The rest of the film is rock solid. It's intense and scary and mostly unpredictable. I did see the ending coming, but that's no big deal. Juliana Harkavy was perfect in her role as the dedicated cop, and honestly, it was kinda fun just watching such a true-blue kind of cop getting mentally tortured. But the way it's done was what made it a special horror film. It utilizes tropism, but it shakes it up just enough to make it feel fresh. There are plenty of jump scares, too, but they don't feel cheap, they feel valid. I just had a brilliant time with this. I see the director did a couple of other movies I really liked. Hopefully there are more surprises from the ones I haven't seen.
