"I'm the Latina Marilyn Monroe. "

One of those movies I knew I was gonna love going in and yeah. New favourite territory honestly. A whole movie about how Drag Queens and Trans women are Angels who make everyone's lives better and we should be thankful to even be around them....slay

Aside from the magnificent costume design and soundtrack. This Film has the best performance of literally every single person in the cast (including Chris penn as closeted homophobe cop). Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes are the last people you would ever expect to eat as drag queens but they fucking devour. Not only with some of the greatest comedic timing and line delivery ("I ain't driving you anymore miss daisy " "Get your hand off my dick") and most impressively they not only keep the Drag Queen Fagcent the whole time, but also make it as realistic and fluid as possible. Never sounding exaggerated and also both of them being able to have a full vocal range while keeping it. And this is WESLEY SNIPES and PATRICK SWAYZE doing it!!!

The true highlight is of course John Leguizamo as Chi Chi. The single best work of Leguizamo's historic career. This is the best any Cis actor will be at playing a trans person. Leguizamo not only looks gorgeous but Chi Chi is just one of the most relatable characters I've ever seen. I too feel embarrassed that I'm not as beautiful as my friends and that I'm using the wrong shade for foundation. But genuinely Leguizamo is incredible at acting with movement alone and Chi Chi's entire story of her increased confidence in her walk, her acceptance of who she is, accepting she is beautiful and can be loved without needing to be treated like an object really hits. What stuck with me most though was when Noxeeema calls Chi Chi "a boy in a dress " and we see Chi Chi have the most completely destroyed look on her face imaginable. Huge props for Beeban Kidron, Johnny Legs and the whole team for being able to have a character like This in a studio movie from 1995

I think for every part of this movie that's considered dated (and reasonable to say! I've seen comments on how this is sort of a mainstream distillation of drag and sanatizes most of the explicitly gay elements. Can't disagree with that) there's elements that have just become stronger with as the years ago on. This movie is a complete celebration of drag and the concept is never treated as a joke or something to gawk at. These queens are beautiful and what they do and bring to people is beautiful. I think especially after the huge 2020 wave of anti trans and anti drag laws this movie about how a Gay Wave arriving in small town USA is only gonna improve things holds much stronger. Really do love the ending of the cis straight town all choosing to backup the queens as cheesy as it is, just something that's satisfying to see on the screen. I think this movie has alot of catharsis to it

New movie I'm gonna watch every summer. Robin Williams shows up as a chaser named Jingleheimer
