a slow-burn canadian western/familial drama with cosmic undertones and a creeping atmosphere of dread. orourke’s score is well matched with armstrong’s confident and unhurried direction. beautiful photography of rural alberta and strong performances throughout. sparks feels wholly absorbed in the toil, stubbornness, and impotence of his character. it’s a shame that this still hasn’t found solid distribution. i hope to be able to see “until first light” at some point.
