Eyes Wide Shut functions as an exploration of the concept of sexiness and its basis in mystery and anticipation. It’s often referred to as an “erotic thriller” but I think it’s actually the opposite. There’s so much nudity in the movie that by a certain point, your brain makes no distinction between nude and clothed. Kubrick’s cold and calculated approach is no different when it comes to his framing of sexuality.
And this just underlines the artifice of the sense of mystery that envelops the entire film. Rich people who are so starved for thrills that they have to wear cloaks and masks and to get their rocks off. A secret society based around something as simple and boring as prostitution. But when sex permeates every aspect of life as it does for Bill in the film, how else can you get excited about it? At that point, sex isn’t even sexy.
