Fan-fucking-phenomenal-tastic!
What a movie. The tried and true tag line “subtlety is for cowards” is 100% in effect and and the film is even actively brave in just how far it’s willing to go. The film goes so far that during the buck wild and extremely bloody finale I simply sat dumbstruck with a big old shit eating grin on my face. Yep, I’m the psycho who was endlessly amused by the give no fucks attitude and commitment to the bit. The director had a statement to make and god damn it she was gonna make it!!
The performances by Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are unbelievable. Especially Moore. She does things with camp and knowing winks in total seriousness and that’s a risk! It pays off so well. The film is full on no holds barred body horror in the great Cronenbergian tradition and its gleeful and playful and gross. So good.
The film has such an intense drive to it. It’s thrilling and pulsating. The camera work and stylized editing make this thing pop. I highly doubt Dennis Quaid was in on the joke because he plays the worst kind of fucking misogynistic scumbag and yet he’s an ardent Trumper. Fuck him. He’s great here but he is mercilessly shown to be pure shit in a suit. The film’s perspective is on point and deliriously fun.
The message is well worn but it’s never been told in this way before. It’s never been told with such bombastic boldness and reckless abandon. I’ve literally had the director’s first film Revenge on my List on Shudder for the past so. Or seven years and I hate that I never watch this shit. I got to now. I’ve heard it’s amazing and this showed that she has the goods and I need to see her approach to the rape revenge genre.
Also, she clearly studied sound design at the David Lynch School for Sound Design and graduated with flying colors. Between this and Love Lies Bleeding, 2024 is a golden year for highly detailed and upsetting sound design.
