The Serpent's Nest

The Serpent's Nest

Terrific short film from Alice Maio Mackay released the same year as her debut feature So Vam. I’m still in disbelief at how young she is and to this about how young she was making all these first works is just mind boggling because she’s so talented and I genuinely enjoy her work so far.

This short is a good witchy time that is reminiscent of The Craft but with textual queerness instead of subtextual. I actually kinda wish she revamps this short into a full feature. I think there’s a lot she could mine from the premise.

At just 28 minutes long the film never overstays its welcome and never dips down. We just glow along through this journey of finding acceptance and the potential negative outcomes of even the best things in our lives presently. Love the lead and hope to see them in films in the future.

Included on Dark Star Pictures’ BD of T Blockers.
