Chris Kirby’s review published on Letterboxd:
Surprisingly excellent documentary on both Murnau and his films vibe very Faust.
This is that good shit where it dives into as many aspects of the making of Faust as possible. Detailed and investigative we get what I think all making of should strive to be. Really captivating stuff and major for film buffs and wannabe historians.
The level of detail it goes into about the different versions that exist is insane. Apparently back in the day they could just duplicate negatives like they could just a decade or so later so for such a massive production as Faust that was going to be distributed around the world, Murnau basically shot the film many many times. And when assembling the various takes to the various versions the quality is just all over the map. Just wild stuff. The doc purports that all the best footage was in the US version. You have my attention. See, I have Kino’s BD which only contains the German version. So now I guess I’ll have to research if the US version is available. Cause if that’s better than this German version….wow.
This doc is on Kino’s BD of Faust. And apparently the director made a few Murnau docs and one of included on Kino’s BD of Nosferatu which tells me it’s time for a rewatch so I can pop that disc in finally and then check out the doc cause this is really and excellent doc.
