Chris Kirby’s review published on Letterboxd:
The version I watched on Netflix seven years ago had to have been one of those edited public domain pieces of shit. Watching it now on Criterion Channel (via the restoration on Kino Lorber's BD) and I barely recognized the film.
That or I wasn't in the right headspace at the time.
Whatever it may be this was a much more receptive viewing. I'm still not totally in love with it but I'm totally in love with everything about it. That expressionist design was much more captivating on my TV, the Act breaks helped make it flow much nicer, and hell, the whole prologue which I absolutely did not see when I saw it the first time (some fucking how) made the whole damn thing make much more sense.
The scene where Caesere goes to kidnap Jane is some masterclass in horror shit. The final plot twist is super effective and can still surprise but I think it dampens the overall effect of the main narrative and its subtextual implications. Overall this is a damn good movie. I thought it was fine the first time but didn't are to think on it any further. Now my mind is aflutter with all the richness in detail and the way it's pieced together. That chase sequence is so good. It's just so good.
