Chris Kirby’s review published on Letterboxd:
A lot of fun. It’s amazing how much more lenient the MPAA has gotten regarding gore over the decades. Roth says he’s “throwing back to stuff like Friday The 13th” but all those movie were neutered to fuck and back. This is fucking gnarly!
Great gore, the humor was good and not overpowering (no one fucks a decapitated head like in the OG faux trailer), and the cast was ok. I didn’t love any of them and I think McDreamy did the best despite that extreme inconsistent yet lovably stereotypical New England accent.
I enjoyed it. It doesn’t seem to want to be taken seriously or is striving to be a classic remembered for all time (good cause I do not think Roth has chops good enough for that) so Roth leaned into his strengths and turned in a super enjoyable flick that is easily his best of the four I’ve seen from him. I still have high hopes for Green Inferno whenever I finally decide to watch that.
I also appreciate all the big moments from the faux trailer being recreated here. It’s the little things.
