Chris Kirby’s review published on Letterboxd:
Woke up way too early today and I have a doctor’s appointment this morning so I wasn’t going to work on time anyway. What better way to start the day and the week than watching Alice Maio Mackay’s first feature film, released to festivals when she had just turned 17 so was either 16 or possibly 15 when she made it. God she is so talented.
Drag Queen Vampires who subvert the othering of vampires and transforms them into queer vigilantes taking their power back from a violent and hateful world. It’s great. It’s so camp and so fun. Mackay has always shown her Bava influence and it’s just kinda fun to go from watching a few Bava’s over the weekend back to MacKay’s gorgeous bisexual lighting. The purples are what I love the most.
Not at all the level of quality one would expect from a 17 year olds debut film. But there are more rough bits compared to her later efforts. Fight choreography is not her strong suit. That was the worst of it for me. But yeah, this film is extremely watchable and continues my adoration of her work. I can’t wait to see Carnage for Christmas and the million other films I hope she makes.
Now does anyone know where I can watch the rest of her short films? I only could find Tooth 4 Tooth which leaves four other shorts listed on IMDB that I definitely want to watch.
