Chris Kirby’s review published on Letterboxd:
I loved the Made in Abyss TV anime when it first aired. With the second season now airing I’m reminded that I need to watch the third movie as it is connecting plot and not just a throwaway film. So since the BD set comes with the first two recap films as well I might as well get completely refreshed.
This first film condenses the first seven or eight episodes down to a two hour runtime. While I don’t remember super explicitly what has been excised this film has all the really important beats and does a fantastic job of driving the story without feeling like things are cut out. The lore is laid out and mysteries are compounded and you really get into the tale of these two kids adventuring down into the abyss.
It ends in a great place too. Just before the story becomes UNIMAGINABLE SUFFERING.
If you don’t have time for the full series (which is only about an extra hour and a half or so than the first two movies combined) this is a good film that more than gets the job done.
