Chris Kirby’s review published on Letterboxd:
Very good film about the ways cinema can tell personal stories in the guise of fictional narratives and expel thoughts and demons in the process. The cherry on top is that the film is told in an elliptical manner that provides ambiguity and a very Mulholland Drive vibe to the film.
To keep the Mulholland Drive parallel, like that movie showcased a tour de force performance from Naomi award so does this film for Aubrey Plaza. She’s incredible in each specific way she has to perform. It swings from subtle and subdued to bombastic and uncontainable and everything in between. So many moods and situations and she meets them all, she’s incredible.
For many Aubrey a plaza fans this is going to be a left field film for them but it follows in a strong line of art house films with abstraction and multiple layered stories. For me it’s a great one that felt good to sit with even during the, intentionally, uncomfortable bits. It’s fun and funny and dark and revealing. Add it to the list of films about film and get excited for what the director does in the future. Plaza deserves to be a bigger star and hopefully this is her gateway. But by no means is she alone, the other two leads give memorable performances as well.
Really loving this the more I think back on it and my brain works through each of its parts and the interplay between them. Naughty bear.
