Chris Kirby’s review published on Letterboxd:
Still love this to bits. Wanted to revisit it ever since it hit Shudder but the time (and wife’s approval cause I thought she’d enjoy this one) never hit. Then I got the BD because I loved it that much but never got to popping it in for similar. But I had a miserable fuck of a day so my wife gave me carte Blanche so I went for it.
I love this movie.
I love the aesthetic, the pops and scratches that show up through the film, the whole 16mm-ness of it (was it shot in 16 or just an effect overlay? I don’t know if I know). I love the two act structure. The first being a “you know what’s coming” tension builder that makes you yell at the TV cause even without the knowledge we have from the prologue this dude is giving off all the red flags. The second act just being a fucking mindfuck hallucination cause by severe brain trauma on a person already mentally fucking deranged? I. Love. It.
I love the weird red owl. I love the weird Blood Diner-esque brain thing. I love the Erinyes. I love the mysterious people walking outside of view. It’s all very cool, very creepy, very strange and surreal (my favorite things), and even manages legit creeps. The second act is such chaos. It’s exactly My Shit.
I love the final scene and that final shot that lingers over the entire end credits. It’s so fucking good.
I’m sad this wasn’t a big a hit as I thought it should be but it works for me and that’s all that matters.
