Bottoms

Finally getting around to this now that it's streaming on Prime. I went in as blind as I could, knowing only that it was a tongue-in-cheek satire of raunchy high school comedies; and, while that's basically what was delivered, I was totally not expecting the degree to which the film would take its absurdist comedy. The dialogue is full of completely ridiculous statements, the secondary characters are all over-the-top caricatures, and the violence is visceral. Seligman and the cast allow the world of the film to come alive and exist in this post-Tim and Eric, Internet-era comedy space. The film feels like a combination of I Think You Should Leave, Anchorman, and Superbad, though it's able to retain its own unique identity.

The primary draw of the film is the cast, led by Rachel Sennott as PJ and Ayo Edebiri as Josie. Both are absolutely, effortlessly hilarious. The supporting cast, especially Summer Joy Campbell (Sylvie) and Ruby Cruz (Hazel) are able to shine and offer some genuine laugh-out-loud moments as well.

Incredibly crude and hilarious, though fairly lightly plotted (it's a satire painted in broad strokes, so don't go in expecting much beneath the surface), but it delivers on what it sets out to do. I can see this being something I rewatch at some point, or perhaps more than once. A worthwhile modern comedy, which is a major accomplishment, if I'm being honest.
