This perceptive character study set in Buenos Aires skillfully blends pathos and deadpan laughs. To say that the aimless and hapless protagonist, a gay man in his 30s with a penchant for straight dudes, hit close to home would be an understatement. This is the sophomore feature for filmmaker Iair Said, who stars, writes and directs this tasty tour de force with an agreeable blend of cynicism and sweetness, but the MVP here is Rita Cortese as his character's spirited mother.

Of Dogs and Men 2024
Noteworthy because it's the first Israeli-made fiction feature to deal with the October 7 attacks head on, but this is a rather disjointed and uneven docudrama that nevertheless finds its footing when it begins to focus more on animal rescue efforts. There is also an acknowledgement of the atrocities in Gaza.

Settle down, folks. It's just okay.
Takes an eternity to get going. Pretty decent once it does. Way too long, but Cameron still knows how to stage a bloodbath. However, he still hasn't been able to figure out a way to make a compelling case for high frame rate projection.

Evil Dead Rise 2023
What are y'all smoking?
It begs you to care for the tight-knit family at its center, then simultaneously invites you to savor the grisly details of their perilous dilemma. It's unable to reconcile these impulses, plus it turns into a slog. Still, it features some well-staged mayhem ... that's nevertheless short on creativity and can't quite shake off a been there/done that staleness.
