  10 reasons why Top Secret! is better than Airplane!:

  1. Spy movies are, like, far more fun than airplane movies.

  2. Val Kilmer > Robert Hays.

  3. That soundtrack is legitimately great.

  4. The central romance is developed in more interesting ways, and feels more engaging.

  5. There's a villain this time, and he's actually pretty good.

  6. The idea that several time periods seem to co-exist (Nazi Germany; 50's and 60's music culture; 80's politics) shouldn't work, but does. Brilliantly.

  7. Omar Sharif!

  8. Michael Gough!!

  9. Peter Cushing!!!

  And finally...

  10. Top Secret! opens with a Beach Boys parody song about skeet shooting on surf boards. You can't argue with that.

  Seriously, this is the hardest I've laughed at a comedy in ages. No wonder that it's Weird Al Yankovich's favourite film.

  Leslie Nielsen has my heart and for that reason I typically rank The Naked Gun series higher, but if I’m being objective this is the best spoof movie ever made. I can point to scenes or moments of every other great spoof movie where they lose momentum or run thin on laughs, but Top Secret! never stops.

  Roger Ebert noted in his review of The Naked Gun that it’s hard to say much about a comedy other than that it’s funny. With that in mind, the highest praise I can give to Top Secret! is that it’s never not funny. One of the best comedies of all time and I’ll log it for a sixth time if that’s what it takes to prove it! Don’t make do it!

  Part Six of Preparing (As Much As Humanly Possible) For Inherent Vice

  Top Secret! is both a mischievous spoof and an entertaining spy picture in its own right, rambunctiously toying with cliches and tropes until it emerges as one of the great works of surrealism ever made by the Zucker Bros. It may not match the fluidity and iconic stature of Airplane! or the modern revitalization of The Naked Gun, but it is a film that was made to entertain and to bring out constant belly laughs.

  Val Kilmer absolutely owns the character of Nick Rivers, and his physicality and dedication to the film is commendable to say the least. The direction is incredibly visual, with key areas of the frame revealing unexpected but hilarious bits of humor that is timed to perfection. The jokes come at a nonstop pace, and by the end, you're either utterly exhausted or ready to jump right back into the lunacy.

  I just lose it every time Latrine shows up all wounded. One of my all-time favorite gags is the guy jumping on the grenade and everyone else around him blowing up.
