" It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what. How did he know that?"
I have lost count of how many times I have seen this film. But, no matter how many times I see it, the scene when Will Smith claps his hands in uncontrollable happiness always brings tears. Tears of happiness. This film makes me happy in a heavy sort of way and gives me ultimate satisfaction. But, it can always be only a pursuit? Can't we ever actually have it ? This is an eternal question.
This movie is so dated - it’s painful how obvious it is that it was made before the 2008 financial crisis. *This movie could not be made today.*
It’s complete neoliberal schmuckery - Reagan on the tv, the morals of ‘taxes very very bad, government reach in your pockets’ & ‘school don’t mean nothing unless you get your 401k’, and the completely unapologetic glorification of stock brokerage. Instead of criticising this culture, this movie participates in it, and in a way that also makes light of race relations in America with its assumption of black stereotype (it literally opens with Will Smith saying “I didn’t meet my dad until I was 28!!!”) yet paints itself in a post-racial society where as…
Bullshit capitalist propaganda that tries to reinforce the false “bootstrap” narrative and suggests that the (specifically PoC) working class only live in poverty because they “aren’t working hard enough” and not because the system is totally broken and prejudiced.
I’m sorry, but I can’t defend this film in good conscience.
Jaden is cute though.
Doing an assignment on this film where Word has to constantly remind you that the title isn't spelt right is so much fun
This movie could never be made today.
At its core it has a sort of Reagan-era optimism that by working hard and being better than your peers you can pull yourself up by your bootstraps. The film was made shortly before the ‘08 crash, which caused a souring on the concept of the American Dream. This film is a remnant of its time, and yet, in a bubble, it still works.
I can be skeptical of films like this, yet Will Smith’s performance brings it all together. With a worse performance, you’d get a less likable character, and the only reason this works is because of Chris’ earnestness. He pursues his goals for the right reasons, and gets beaten down,…
