Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities: The Murmuring
Andrew Lincoln had it dialed to DILFCON 1 and it went totally unappreciated. Where is Esther when you need her?
Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities- Episode 8
Probably the least scary of the anthology, but also the most heartbreaking. Trauma as a vehicle for horror is something Kent has proven to be incredibly talented at telling, but the horror in this feels more like an afterthought. Slightly lazy and mostly predictable, the silver lining is that the dynamic between Davis and Lincoln is so good, it’s easily forgiven.
I’m pretty sure they would’ve processed grief better if they didn’t have that boring ass job 😔
Really liked this one. A ghostly story of grief that felt like a fitting conclusion to the Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. This one directed by Jennifer Kent re-teaming with Essie Davis, which inevitably gives it major The Babadook vibes. Beautifully captured. Loved the series overall, too. Would be cool to see del Toro produce another season. I just kind of wish the episodes had dropped earlier in October so I could watch it throughout the Halloween season.
Degrees of Kevin Bacon: 2
1. Andrew Lincoln and Laura Linney in Love Actually
2. Laura Linney and Kevin Bacon in Mystic River
It baffles me that this was saved for last. It's not bad by any means, but it’s really unremarkable. For a series that was touted as being creepy, a ghostly meditation on grief was not what I was expecting for a finale, especially right before Halloween. All in all, The Murmuring Is a redundant coda to an uneven experiment. I really enjoyed The Autopsy, and The Viewing but every other entry fell woefully short for me. With the talent behind this, CoC’s inconsistency ended up being the scariest part. If this does become an annual anthology, which I hope it does, there's a lot of room for improvement.
I'm glad this is over so I can stop reviewing these individually. If I had to rate Cabinet of Curiosities as a whole, I’d give it a generous 3 out of 5.

that woman was so annoyingly miserable during every second of this, it made liking this episode almost impossible
I expected no other than greatness from Jennifer Kent and Essie Davis. They did not disappoint. This is also the first time I've seen Andrew Lincoln since his departure from The Walking Dead and let me just say that I miss this dude's presence on the screen.
I might sound bias but I genuinely believe this is the best one in the series.
