FBI agent Max Reed witnesses Dr. Tetsu Segawa - a researcher for the mysterious Chronos Corporation - being murdered. Dr. Segawa had stolen an alien device known as "The Guyver" from Chronos. Pretty flat and amateurish in all the ways you'd expect of a movie made simply because two of the best make-up/VFX artists of the 80s wanted to fuck around (and a producer they impressed was game enough to burn money letting them do it), but as far as the insane attempt here to turn genuinely transgressive horror satires like Robocop, Re-animator and Brain Damage into Ninja Turtles or an episode of Power Rangers goes? More successful than it probably should be. Idk. Lots of goop and whooshing. I had fun. Great gag in here with Linnea Quigley that feels like a deleted scene from Gremlins 2.
Can’t believe they plaster Mark Hamill’s name front and centre for the posters, he’s barely in it, and he’s not even the titular character. Almost criminal. Jeffrey Combs having minimal screen time is also crazy. Of course the creature effects are amazing, that’s expected with Screaming Mad George films. But the film falls short practically everywhere else; boring action, thin plot, acting as if it was a Power Rangers show.

wild how much this feels like it could only be made for children, even in its R-rated cut, predicting where Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would go in a couple of years while also feeling like sincere homage to kaiju and series like Yokai Monsters — obviously, the reason to watch this is for the creature effects which feel like TMNT villains by way of Troma, complete with a racist caricature that makes Skids and Mudflap from Revenge of the Fallen feel subtle
"The Guyver" is a 1991 science fiction/action feature directed by Screaming Mad George (Joji Tani) and Steve Wang. The film is based on Yoshiki Takaya's manga "Bio Booster Armor Guyver" which ran in various syndications from 1985 to 2016. Extremely tongue-in-cheek - in fact, basically an outright comedy, with hammy-to-the-max performances by genre stalwarts like Hamill, Michael Berryman, and Jeffrey Combs. Feels like an upper-tier Power Rangers episode. I assume critics at the time slammed this for being plotless and stupid, instead urging people to go see the new Mike Nichols movie or w/e, but it's very enjoyable to watch now that almost no movies contain practical effects.
I've seen far too many movies that had absolutely nothing going for them to give this shit for a punchy script. Heck I've seen worse Yuzna productions. Everyone excuses Society for ending with the world's most insane orgy, why not this for having a rapping Gremlin?!!! Also, it's the fucking Guyver, how interesting do you think the source material is? Spoiler alert it isn't. Steve Wang & Screaming Mad George probably took a look at it and said fuck it let's just make a buncha cool monsters. Anyone who calls this garbage is probably right but also should be locked up in a room with Avatar on repeat.

Oh my god I fucking Love this stupid stupid stupid movie.
So this shlub falls face first on a magic dinner plate that turns him into a edgelord power ranger who fights monsters that, honestly, look really cool. And the special effects here are amazing. They look better than some modern productions. But I mean it's the dude who made Re-Animator, From BEyond, and Society, so can we be that shocked?
That's the plot, these guys are running from rubber suit monsters trying to fight the magic space dinner plate.
So the question is this as good as the Manga and Anime? Well I haven't read as much of the manga but as good as the Anime? Fuck it's better. Does the Anime have a fish man doing poor raps? No? America wins, AGAIN!

Having never read the manga, this is like the sci-fi Wishmaster (1997). A collective of more fan-favorite genre talent looking to breach the mainstream. Or maybe capitalize on the popularity of those pizza-devouring sewer turtles. Also a great introduction for kiddos too young to witness its cast's harder pictures. Wanna see inbred Michael Berryman strike mortal fear out in the desert? David Gale's head-stump demand "more passion!" while hovering naked unmentionables? Linnea Quigley rip off her upper and lower everything to gyrate atop a grave? Sorry Little Billy, you'll have to wait, but those actors and others, like a barely-used Jeffrey Combs, are on their best behavior here. Screaming Mad George's meticulous wizardry manifests in an awesome Guyver suit battling amphibious demonoid monstrosities. If there's faults, Jack Armstrong's lead defines forgettable and action is way too restrained. This desperately needed Dragon Ball flair where blows send foes rocketing through concrete walls under crushing EDM. Watched via New Line's DVD.
