  It would be relatively easy to lay out my usual cape-shit complaints and leave it at that, but there's something particularly embarrassing about this new Flash movie. Part of it is the amalgamation of many prevalent issues in the industry. Visual effects artists and time crunch. AI assisted models and shitty rendering. A vapid turn towards nostalgic multiverse garbage, and total lack of secrecy in terms of marketing. It feels hopeless. You already know what you're going to see and feel and experience. The Flash lays all of this out shamelessly. Narrative only matters to the point of how it is able to incorporate intellectual property.   It's really jarring that superhero movies are now just pure multiverse "and special guest!" parades for cheap crowd pops and yet also studios are now just casually spoiling all of these nostalgia castings. The Flash is a major case in point: literally all of the marketing has included the scenes of Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne turning up, which in turn makes the entire first hour of the movie feel not like Barry Allen's story but a preamble to this big walk-on. But because said scene is the focal point of the trailer, all of the awkward pauses left in for the crowd to presumably go ballistic are pointless because there's no surprise.   There’s an interesting sequence early in The Flash, where Barry realises that he has effectively rewritten history. This revelation doesn’t come with the discovery of any significant global events. This isn’t a world where the Soviet Union won the Cold War or where the British Empire still exists, where Al Gore won the White House or where 9/11 never happened.

  Instead, Barry discovers that the universe is broken because intellectual property has been reshuffled. Eric Stolz starred in Back to the Future, Michael J.
