Don't really know what to say so I just wanna point out that there's a guy named Adolph Caesar in this. Like what an unfortunate name to have
the scene where Shug sings to Celie is as profoundly magical as any other infamous Spielberg scene
Unforgiving at times and there’s a lot to admire performance wise, but as you’re watching it becomes abundantly clear Spielberg was not the optimal choice to tell this story.
maybe the most bastardised adaptation I’ve ever had the displeasure of sitting through. Spielberg’s instincts towards easy wholesome sentimentalism (not always but it’s a problem here) completely haunt him in depicting a world and a life as dark as Walker’s novel constructs, he can’t allow audiences to feel her pain or the weight of darkness in her world without immediately undercutting it with a sickly nauseating score or excessive gestures of unearned melodrama. it’s the kind of adaptation to shy away from the pain that Celie actually goes through because it won’t hit the ratings of a PG-13, to oscillate into moments of truly misconceived comedy in a film that should have none of it, one where the central feminism…
One of the Spielbergs I've watched the fewest times. Anyway, pretty naive, certainly sanded down from the source, but it's also 40 years old, and of course it's loaded with great performances and he shoots the hell out of it. Extremely Ford-ian, including what it chooses to depict with humor. Also it ain't like too many people were making movies like this about Black women in 1985, and certainly not folks with the profile of biggest filmmaker in Hollywood. Hard to remember this is only his eighth feature.
Whoopi Goldberg’s transformative and commanding performance is THE reason anything in The Color Purple works. Her versatility, power, showcase of defeat and desperation and overall emotional impact is riveting and deserving of all the praise in the world. It’s more an acting showcase than anything, which is why, as a film, I wasn’t totally on board in calling it ‘amazing’ but I can fully respect and admire the impressive tour de force acting ensemble that adds up as one of the best from that era.
This film is a masterpiece and should be heralded as such. Spielberg says he has some regrets that he toned down the nature of some of the relationships at the time. If this was made today there may have been less compromise but a film like this to be made in 1985 is great and I think Spielberg handled this film well. Some amazing acting from Goldberg, Winfrey and Danny Glover who all excelled and shone brilliantly. This film is a must see for any cinephile out there.
Men who only see women as sex objects, house cleaner, someone who tends for them and their kids while they fuck around, want them young, and then insult them as if they're not humans, deserve to go to hell. Women who uplift and empower other women because of love and understanding for having the same unfair experiences deserve freedom, the world, and each other.
*I was giggling, kicking my feet, and smiling during the scene where Shug is singing to Celie. I literally love all their scenes together. Also, Celie is beautiful and have a very pretty smile.
Spielberg had to be convinced by Quincy Jones to direct this adaptation of Alice Walker's extraordinarily powerful book as he originally felt a director of colour would be able to relate more to the material. I can't help wondering what we would have been left with if Jones had been unsuccessful in his quest because Spielberg, I believe, was right with his gut feeling.
The director also states this as his first "adult" film - and while that may be true in his mind, I have to disagree - "Duel", "Jaws" and "Close Encounters" were absolutely adult films - here, "The Color Purple" marks his place on the cinematic map of mediocrity, crowd pleasing and turning promising material into weak,…
