  Decía en la review de Foxcatcher que aquella era una peli donde no había esperanza.
  Bueno, no es que Magical Girl ande sobrada de ella, pero no importa. No importa lo hijo de puta que pueda ser Carlos Vermut ni tampoco los recitales de los actores.
  Magical Girl, al igual que Diamond Flash, trae a la memoria muchas cosas, todas buenas, del cine en general. Del español y del extranjero. Y hay una cosa que ya creí ver en su anterior trabajo, y que igual es una pollez mía, pero veo en Vermut a un Jesús Franco sofisticado y mucho más cerebral. Menos de pensar con la polla y cuidar cada cuadro.
  Bah, yo qué sé. Es la peli que más y mejor ha justificado cualquier hype del cine español en toda su historia.
  Como mínimo.
  La mejor y más retorcida epopeya vengativa que he visto en muchos, muchos años.

  Look, I am not gonna lie. During most of its runtime, I wasn't feeling this movie. All the reviews, especially those by Jacob and Steph_h, which called this movie nearly a masterpiece, gave me the impression that I was being conned. Sluggish pace, long pauses, uninteresting characters, and decisions that seemed very illogical. I could think of a billion other options that could have been taken. As a result, I was ready to give it 2 or 2.5 stars. That slow and bad I thought it was.

  But, as in Burt Lancaster's The Swimmer, a whole third act reframed the whole picture and I became quite riveted and caring for everyone. As if all the building up suddenly came crashing…

  Profesor y alumna, anime y flamenco, literatura y matemáticas, niñas de hielo y fuego, pero sobre todo, una deliciosa fábula en ese microcosmos de contrastes que es España sobre el eterno conflicto entre la pasión y la razón.

  Muchos de los peores crímenes de la historia se cometieron en nombre del amor, tal es la paradoja que el más puro de los sentimientos puede ser desvirtuado al punto de cegarnos, corrompernos, volvernos egoistas e inconcientes de nuestros propios actos, pues pese a su pureza es una flor que nace en un terreno tan volatil como lo es el ser humano.

  He ahi la mitica frase de que los monstruos también aman sin embargo siguen siendo monstruos. En su obra con fondo pero sin forma Vermut nos adentra a un viaje por diferentes dimensiones pero con un hilo conductor que lo unifica todo: el espectador.

  Magical girl follows three people who each lead drastically different lives. Yet their fates are all determined by one and other. The way all of the stories told interweave with each other feels so natural which is no easy feat.

  This is down to the brilliant screenplay and realistic nature of the events that take place. I would believe it if these events took place. Some of it could seem a bit extreme, particularly with Barbara's story, but I didn't feel it was too over the top at any moment.

  Technically magical girl is also brilliant. The cinematography was beautiful and Stationary shots are almost exclusively used which worked like a treat. The framing and shot composition we're absolutely great…

  Enfermiza, retorcida, opresiva. Entré desde el primer momento en su atmósfera y su puzzle. Me deje llevar por sus rígidas interpretaciones y por la constante inquietud. No me soltó nunca por mucho que me revolvía. Fantástica; terrible.

  Sometimes you want to fulfill someone's wish so much that you go to great lengths to do so. For whatever reason this is important, their satisfaction (and perhaps, selfishly, gratification) is important, and you become happy just thinking of how happy they will be, must be.

  And after much effort and sacrifice, you realize this purpose and you give them what they want. Only, perhaps they didn't want it as much as you think they did and the expected sense of elation is awkward and underwhelming. I imagine this must be what parents experience often, as they gift great gifts to their children who may casually express interest in certain commodities only to care less about it than their parents…

Bárbara era la Bárbara de cien mil millones de personas, también era la mía, era la de aquí y allí.
