What starts off as a lovely typical awkward sweet romance between two women who actually have [gasp] chemistry abruptly turns into a movie that doesn't give a flying fuck about the two women it introduced in the first act. And then...
STRAIGHT PEOPLE SAVE THE DAY. CLAP FOR STRAIGHT PEOPLE. THEY ARE GOOD. SOME STRAIGHT PEOPLE AREN'T SO GOOD, BUT THE OTHERS, THEY ARE SO GOOD.
ALSO MICHAEL SCOTT IS HERE PRETENDING TO BE GAY AND PRETTY MUCH BEING AN OFFENSIVE STEREOTYPE EVERY SINGLE SECOND HE'S ON SCREEN.
*AIRHORN NOISE* FUCK FREEHELD
Page and Moore deserve so much better than this mess. And I hope Josh Charles spends every day of his life regretting the day he left The Good Wife.
There’s no pleasure in trashing a film as humanistic and well-intentioned as Freeheld, but just because anyone would agree with its message doesn’t mean this glorified Lifetime movie does a worthy job of conveying it. The story itself, based on real-life events that transpired in Ocean County, New Jersey, during the winter of 2005, is a beautiful paean to love, dignity and progress. It begins when Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore), an eminently capable detective who has spent 23 years on the force and roughly 45 years in the closet, commits herself to a much younger woman named Stacie Andree (Ellen Page). When Laurel is diagnosed with terminal cancer, she naturally wants to pass her pension benefits to Stacie so her partner can continue to live in the home they bought together, but local law doesn’t acknowledge same-sex unions. Cue a courageous legal battle that precipitates—and accelerates—a sweeping change across the country.
At first Freeheld does come across as a little clunky, the dialogue is a bit stilted and awkward, the pace doesn’t flow smoothly and there’s just something a little “off” about it, however, once it gets a bit of steam behind it then it really comes into its own and becomes a great film, and by the end it has completely redeemed itself of its clumsy beginning.
Beautiful work by both Julianne Moore and Elliot Page, and the supporting players Michael Shannon and Steve Carell perform well also. The true story that this is based on is infuriating and also inspiring, the fight for equality that that these women is really so trivial and should never have had to be fought in the first place but like one of the great lines in the film says “you are handed everything, I have to fight” which really sums up the differences in everyday life for minority people.
I literally thought: “why not suffer today?” And turned on this movie for the 4th time....
