IFFI 2024, Day 2, Film 3
Hating a film is rare for me because more often than not, I tend to watch films that sound like I will like them, but when it came to Despatch premiere at IFFI Goa, despite being new to Kanu Behl's directorial work, I still went in for its exciting premise along with Manoj Bajpayee of course, and ahh what a massive disappointment the film turned out to be for me. I don't follow the OTT originals space that much, but having heard very good things about Manoj's prolific OTT/ZEE5 run in recent years, I thought this would be a minimum guarantee film, but was rather shocked to see an exciting premise marred by such…
My first Kanu Behl feature film.
An inexplicably horny Alan J Pakula film, whose tiresome first half made me nearly give up on it- until the intrigue finally revealed itself and the noose got tighter and tighter on our leads and our attention spans.
Still, the clumsiness of the first few clues and how they were put together and the typical Western lens of a messy personal life stretched this film for far longer than necessary.
Some creative quotes and objects in the frames backgrounds.
Kanu Bahl disappoints after giving such a raw film like Agra, here also the director tries to do similar things in bits, but it doesn't work out. In an attempt to make it more authentic, the film loses its thrill and intensity which was needed in crime stories. The story heavily focuses on Manoj's character but his conflicts are with the other characters, but the film fails to bring those other characters in the forefront. Film length too harms the effectiveness, it was stretched too long and nothing much was happening in between which was interesting. I liked Manoj's portrayal of a crime reporter who is hungry for a headline, but also a pathetic and selfish person in personal life.…
Sadly, this film kept disengaging me with every new angle it brought. Went for Bajpayee, stayed for Bajpayee. #MAMI
you know when you’re having a good day and then manoj bajpayee, of all people comes up on your twitter timeline butt ass naked in crime petrol lighting? #mylaststraw
When I saw Joram,I was blown away. The way he keeps reinventing himself is applaud worthy. Here,he channels almost all known emotions known to man including being a horny prick. The film does overstay it's welcome and some of the sub plots get lost along the way
Kanu behl should take a break from filmmaking and introspect about why he can’t make a movie as good as Titli (2014) his debut feature again because the quality of his recent film is declining with every movie.
I think Kanu Behl might be the filmmaker that induces the most amount of irritation in me. I walked out of his previous film AGRA after 40 minutes, and I watched Despatch only because it starred Manoj Bajapayee. An extremely boring, and unnecessarily perverse film and that has nothing to write home about.
