  So, about that ending. It both *is* and *isn't* Chinatown. It's a part of the city to be abstracted, disembodied, insidiously morphed into a racist calculation of laborious figures by those who are allowed to freely leave. Even as J.J. Gittes submits and wanders into the night, he isn't stranded in the nocturnal wasteland in which he once operated within. He's a man of privilege, relatively, but the system is now seen as not simply vertically integrated but horizontally manipulated by the elite.   The most interested I’ve been in a movie in a long time, I was sucked in with every scene. The screenplay does a fantastic job at giving you just enough, it’s as though each individual word was carefully thought out. No wonder it’s regarded as one of the best screenplays of all time! I’ve also decided to have the unpopular opinion that Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors! God damn is he good in this movie. Loved this!

  One of the greatest New Hollywood pastiches because its stylistic romance for its LA history and film noir milieu is to Robert Towne quite witty and nostalgic, while to Roman Polanski (whose recent experiences in LA were as ugly and tragic as they come) it's a beautiful surface covering a source of cruel, rancid irony and depraved corruption.
