  Shooter McGavin dies in a car accident and gets reincarnated as RDJ, but the angels in heaven forget to give him an amnesia shot. So when he meets his former wife and friend his memories come back.

  He convinces his former wife of who he is and they almost boink, but then he helps his friend boink his wife instead. The angels come down to earth and give him his amnesia shot so he forgets who his true soul is. Then he falls in love with his daughter, and everyone knows and is OK with that.

  The whole incest thing was icky, it's still his soul! That's his daughter! Bish no. If they had just left that whole thing out it would have been an OK body swap movie. RDJ was funny, Ryan O'Neil was charming and Cybil had a great wardrobe, I'll give it that.

  Super-charming and super-icky lost 80's ‘gem’ that clumsily blends Heaven Can Wait and Back to the Future in a way that only its premium-rate cast can save...

  Hold on, this is going to get bumpy...Christopher McDonald is marrying Cybill Shepherd in 1963, much to the chagrin of their best friend Ryan O'Neal who is also in love with Shepherd. Whilst investigating a crooked judge, McDonald is killed but before he can get his memory shot up in that there heaven, he is reincarnated as Robert Downey Jnr. Flash forward to 1989 and Downey Jnr falls in love with McDonald's and Shepherd's daughter Mary Stuart Masterson (who, if you've been keeping up, is actually his own daughter...), before being brought home…

  Chances Are is a high concept, if breezy, romantic comedy of reincarnation with Cybill Shepherd’s deceased husband coming back twenty years later as Robert Downey Jr. The film has at least three perfectly timed screwball comedy scenes. The easy to watch Shepherd is, in a word, virtuous. Downey is quick and sharp-witted, beyond his contemporaries for this kind of 80’s movie. But you couldn’t possibly begin to enjoy this unless you have a penchant for shameless corny sentiment. I do. With Ryan O'Neal, Mary Stuart Masterson, Christopher McDonald.

  Pitch meeting for this movie:

  “Yeah, I think we can play around with incest a little bit as long as there’s a supernatural component. Back to the Future did it a few years back and just look at their numbers. Turns out people enjoy that sort of thing.”

  A pre-sober Downey wriggles around and acts like a general wackadoo - not as much as he does in Heart and Souls where the dead people possess him and he flails like he’s been electrocuted - but I assume he and Sizemore were snorting some fat rails on that one so...

  I needed something fizzy and innocuous and that’s what I got. Mission accomplished.

  this was weird (and sometimes uncomfortable) but it was honestly really fun to watch especially since i watched this with my mom who hasn’t seen this since she was like 18 years old!!!! the right company can seriously change the entire movie experience

  I don’t use the term guilty pleasure, because I have no guilt feelings about loving something, but I do love this movie probably more than I should. Sure it’s a romantic comedy, but I just love this premise and it is carried by a lovable performance from RDJ before he had really caught fire as a leading man. Shepherd had been having success on the small screen so this was a great time for her. I know a lot of people associate Christopher McDonald with Happy Gilmore, but this was the movie that I think of when I see him. And I wished I liked Love Story half as much as this when it comes to Ryan O’Neal. It is…
