  A Passage to India: Dawn of the Wobble

  As I’ve mentioned a few times already, I’m a big fan of movies and series that educate me more on events I would’ve never known otherwise. In the case of this film, I am not that familiar with India’s vast history, and the big event portrayed here took place when I was still month's old.

  In some ways, the film plays like Munich though it leans less into the spy genre and more into the action thriller. The high-contrasted and cold cinematography adds a level of bleakness that for the most part, works for the film, all while adding a nice sense of style.   A masterclass of a dark crime drama from Anurag Kashyap that chronicles the events and investigation around the 1993 Bombay bomb blast in a powerful and gripping manner. He brilliantly utilizes the guerrilla filmmaking technique to widen the scale and original facts to set his fictional police procedural as raw and hard hitting. The performances from entire cast is solid. It is a definite must watch gritty drama.

  Technically speaking, Black Friday is superb. The use of monochrome, the cinematography, the way the music is employed – it’s all a level beyond what we generally expect of Bollywood. It’s a tight, gripping story, one that lags in the second half, yes, but which is nevertheless the best docudrama ever made in India. And that’s not only because it is such a marvel of filmmaking technique, but because it’s so even-handed despite the fact that it depicts such a controversial set of events.

  Gangs of Wasseypur is Anurag Kashyap's magnum opus and Black Friday is Anurag Kashyap's masterpiece.

  The thing I love about Kashyap is that he doesn't hold anything back in his films, he shows the cruelty of world without filtering anything. Black Friday is truly his bravest and most honest attempt in making a film, it's an absolute stellar piece of work in every sense, very well researched and hard hitting.

  There are countless number of Bollywood films on intelligence officers tackling terrorism. This one dared to be different and it became a character study of terrorism itself, from how it propagates to its consequences, it showed it all. Kay Kay Menon as usual gave an outstanding performance here, all the supporting characters are written and performed very well too.

  Overall despite being very dark and gritty Black Friday is the kind of film everyone should definitely watch.

  Am 12. März 1993 fand in Bombay (heutiges Mumbai) eine Serie von 12 Bombenanschlägen statt. Die Angriffe wurden als Vergeltung für die Unruhen in Bombay durchgeführt, die Anfang des Jahres stattfanden. Bei den Bombenanschlägen kam es zu 257 Toten und 713 Verletzten.

  Ich hab mich mal wieder entschlossen bei unserem DuBFaL-Projekt mitzumachen und hab es nicht bereut. Der Film ist Bombe (sorry für das geschmacklose Wortspiel, aber ich konnte nicht anders), bei dem nicht wenige Szenen in Erinnerung bleiben. Die Geschichte ist packend bei der auch die Antagonisten ihre nachvollziehbare Motivation erhalten. Auch die Beamten stehen bei ihren Ermittlungen nicht immer im positiven Licht da.

  Only in an unhealthy society and unhealthy society can such films be made. Kashyap is as unceremonious like Kinji Fukasaku, Costa-Gavras or even Yilmaz Güney. It is his cinema and he makes it very clear throughout - starting from a blast that was the upshot of the blast that ends the film, he mixes the deck to the point where we can't see causes and consequences anymore, where everything becomes the same. Even if the title is "Black Friday", the film is anything but black, it walks in all the colors and their variations.   Would absolutely be a killer miniseries if made today, though it’s incredible that Anurag Kashyap got this made in 2004 (easily one of my favorite movie years, so many different genres and styles at their respective peaks). The iconic police chase scene influencing Danny Boyle to make Slumdog Millionaire is one of the coolest pieces of director trivia, and it really is that breathtaking to watch all these years later. There’s not a dull moment to be found, rather so much information being thrown out there, so that the second half inevitably becomes a drag.   Hindus, thirsting for Muslim blood. Muslims, thirsting for Hindu blood. Revenge begets revenge begets revenge. 
  
  Gritty, dark, hard hitting crime docudrama. A brilliant film that is unbiased and authentic and has exceptionally well done performance by every talented actors. We will never again get a movie like Black Friday, if such a movie comes today there will be probably riots for the movie itself. Only shows how the movie is so relavant even today, nothing much has changed in the country. 

  Anurag Kashyap is perhaps one of the best directors of Bollywood. Laut aao peak Kashyap sir.
