Wir befinden uns in New Mexico im Jahre 1861. Verschiedene Parteien machen sich auf die Suche nach der Stadt Horizon, um sich eine neue Existenz aufzubauen.

Kevin Costner will mit seinem Mamut Projekt Horizon das Genre des Westerns wiederbeleben. Horizon ist ein vierteiliges Epos mit einer Lauflänge von über 12 Stunden Gesamtlänge. Es ist ein Herzensprojekt des Regisseurs und das merkt man diesem Film zu jeder Sekunde an. Horizon ist ein großes Epos, mit großen Ambitionen, weiten Landschaftsaufnahmen, die im Kino auf der großen Leinwand mit Sicherheit eine großartige Wirkung haben und jeder Menge Charaktere, deren Wege sich im Laufe der Handlung kreuzen oder sich in den noch kommenden drei Teilen noch kreuzen werden. Aufgrund der großen Ambitionen des Regisseurs kommt man sich vor, als würde man den Auftakt einer HBO-Serie schauen. Horizon sieht fantastisch aus, hat viel zu erzählen und nimmt sich dafür viel Zeit. Aufgrund der Figurenkonstellationen die in drei Handlungssträngen parallel nebeneinander laufen, fehlte mir persönlich die Fokussierung.

Wenn man sich auf einen langsamen Handlungsaufbau, fantastische Landschaftsaufnahmen und eine Masse an Figuren einstellen kann, dann könnte Horizon Chapter 1 einen guten Auftakt darstellen. Die angesprochenen Punkte kann man aber natürlich auch kritisch betrachten, dann scheitert Horizon auf ganzer Linie. Mir persönlich hat der Auftakt gut gefallen und ich möchte wissen, wie es weitergeht. Ob Kevin Costner sein mit vier Teilen geplantes Epos vollenden darf, ist fraglich, denn der erste Teil ist im Kino gefloppt.

Kevin Costner wants to revive the Western genre with his mammoth project Horizon. Horizon is a four-part epic with a total running time of over 12 hours. It is a project close to the director's heart and you can tell that in every second of this film. Horizon is a big epic, with big ambitions, wide landscape shots that are sure to have a great effect on the big screen and lots of characters whose paths cross in the course of the plot or will cross in the three parts to come. Due to the director's big ambitions, you feel like you are watching the start of an HBO series. Horizon looks fantastic, has a lot to tell and takes a lot of time to do so. Due to the constellation of characters that run parallel to each other in three storylines, I personally felt that there was a lack of focus.

If you can expect a slow plot development, fantastic landscape shots and a mass of characters, then Horizon Chapter 1 could be a good start. But of course you can also look at the points mentioned critically, in which case Horizon fails across the board. Personally, I liked the start and I want to know what happens next. It is questionable whether Kevin Costner will be able to complete his planned four-part epic, because the first part flopped in the cinema.
