JFK

JFK

I have an excellent book called The Oliver Stone Experience (Matt Zoller Seitz, 2016) which is kind of a lover’s quarrel and a hagiography in one. I was so excited to read the JFK segment, which was expectedly bonkers. Zoller Seitz asked Oliver Stone about the media’s negative response to his film, and Stone had this to say, which I find interesting!

I don't call myself a historian. I call myself a dramatist trying to dramatize what the history professor Peter Kuznick has been teaching. The media have a pro-America, triumphalist point of view, and the Cold War is very important in their doctrine, that we had to fight against Soviet aggression, that we had a containment policy that came out of a belief that we didn't need to in go through another world war. The essential truth here is, the biggest risk of World War III was us: We'd built ourselves up. The greatest enemy we have is ourselves, and I say it in Platoon. I would not have said that it was that true about American history until now, but it's very clear to me after these last five years, the period of working on Untold History.
