Magnolia 1999
there's something about the messiness and icarus-ambition of this movie that excites and energizes me. if you promise to hear it out, magnolia unfurls into something marvelous and profoundly affecting. every criticism i've heard of the structure of this movie that has made me appreciate it more; i've instead become better nestled into my love for the self-indulgent propulsion at the heart of the film. why should art about messy and overwhelming human experiences itself be tidy or self contained?…

It is difficult to talk and to be understood.
Val, the documentary, comes at the end of an impromptu Val Kilmer movie marathon for me. In the last week, I watched 13 Kilmer movies, and another 12 the couple weeks before that. every time i cross the street i imagine (in great detail) the sensation of being hit by a car—a half-second of nothing at all, the smash and ring of impact, then a terrible creeping realization that all-too-quickly becomes an undeniable wave of sensation and pain, like water sucked into an empty bucket fully submerged. and then i reach the other side of the street
