Messiah of Evil 1973
a woman comes searching for her father at his beachfront home, and immediately the disorienting art and architecture of the house mirrors the unfamiliar town and its unhelpful inhabitants. more useful to her (but not by much) is a traveling collector of dark folklore and his entourage of mistresses whose alien lifestyle seems as much an invasion as the hoard of bloodthirsty townsfolk gathering at the edge of the sea.
atmospheric mood pieces are my favorite kind of horror, and Messiah of Evil may be the pinnacle of the genre, enveloping the viewer in Lovecraftian apocalyptic dread, though the literal narrative is often elusive.
