The Brutalist

The Brutalist

Where to begin? The Brutalist speaks volumes both with its portrayal of immigration in the United States at this time and the beautiful, strong and poetic filmmaking by Brady Corbet. Every buzz you hear about this film is warranted. It’s an epic for the ages. It’s structure and result feel monumental. The performances do just the same with absolutely killer performances from Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones. They give the film a sense of specification. Having such a young filmmaker on a project like this feels like a risk, but I think it adds flavor to an already perfect design. The brutalist is a film of the year and maybe even decade as I right this.

The brutalist’s runtime allows it to fully develop a story of tragedy and great beauty. In the beginning, we are seeing a man who is now free see the Statue of Liberty and has a face of pain with emotions of gratitude. He is seen as a recovering man. He’s been through so much and now staying with his cousin is nothing to his name in America. As the film goes on, his beautiful work as an architect doesn’t go unknown. But it’s gradual. He faces many obstacles and different life experiences before he gets to this point. It’s gradual, but consistent tone is brilliant in this film and continued to transcend its greatness for me.

When the intermission ends ended, I felt the forceful use of drama to the point where it shook up its tone. But this is a nitpick, and it soon bounces back into this perfect pace of the epic it was. In the second half we are giving little details of hatred that have hidden but visible in the first act as well. Though Lázló is a well recognized artist and a man with a brilliant mind. He is still treated like an animal. The harm he faces slowly drives him mad. He becomes tempered and, more importantly, becomes heartbroken. This act is responsible for some of the best performances it speaks volumes to other great classics.

The films' atmosphere is felt along the lines. With a powerful score, some of the most beautiful visuals and performances shake your spirits. I’ve rarely ever felt what I felt from this and seeing it on the screen made me remember why I started getting into this art form in the first place. It’s emotion and feelings emotions are me feel are almost spiritual as dramatic as they sound, it’s just the simple truth. The film clashes genres in such a smooth way. The only way I found feel was like I was witnessing a masterpiece first hand. I’m not one with words so it’s hard to really demonstrate the impact this film has but its importance will be noted for years to come. I can’t help but feel this same style as one of my all-time favorites There Will be Blood. So hurry while you can and watch, the 2024, There Will be Blood, The Brutalist.
