“I have a big brother, which is way better.”

I just want to give Zoé Héran’s character a big hug. Just for a little bit. Tell them it’s okay, even if it’ll be tough sometimes. Growing up is hard.

Though I’ll never personally feel the internal anxiety and war with identity that Laure/Mickaël felt throughout the summer this movie takes place, there was still an ultra-relatable quality to the character that made them so charming and sweet.

    This movie has…

“When you see me, you know, do you feel... ‘Oh, I know her. That's Mom’? Or do you ever think- I mean, do you ever think of me as, uh - as, uh, dopey or mean or- or, uh -“
“No, you're smart, you're pretty... you're nervous, too.”

The emotional intelligence that Mabel & Nick’s children possess, especially in the sequence above, ugh, that was the first time I teared up while watching A Woman Under the Influence. Safe to say,…

“It's not fair! It's not fair. All my life I've been afraid of becoming like him, all my life. All my life with you, and it's not fair. He can't just say he's sorry, and make it all go away, it's too late. It's not that easy. It's not fair. It's not fucking fair.”

Well, damn. It’s not fair at all.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was pure dynamite here. A masterclass. And Ethan Hawke? That’s my guy.

Sidney Lumet, with what ended up…

“I’ve been there. I know how it feels.”

    Tip your delivery driver.

It's a particularly cold and brutal week for New Jerseyans and New Yorkers. Can imagine that more people will be ordering Uber Eats and delivery than usual.

If you can’t go and pick it up yourself, tip your delivery driver a little extra. You’ve no idea what they’ve got at stake.

I suppose that’s the biggest lesson of this movie. Compassion for your fellow man. Great flick, loved the vérité approach to this film. The DV makes this so immersive, tactile, and real.

“Could the ugly, untalented gays please report to the principal’s office?”

Last night I got to watch the World Premiere of this movie at SXSW at the beautiful Paramount Theatre. I had my Shiva Baby hat on and was ready for the latest collab between Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott.

And this plays so well, especially with a crowd. Seligman introduced this movie as being “silly and absurd and gay” (which got rapturous applause). And she wasn’t kidding, most of all…

“I don’t want to die, I want to live.”
    “I keep filming.”

Dear Sama, your parents are incredible, brave, and amazing people. The existence of this film is a testament to the strength and fortitude of the people.

“This is not about the place, places are about their people.”

This is an intense, devastating, and crushing documentary film made by Waad al-Kateab. I’ve never seen anything like it, and it should be required viewing for all people, to gain an understanding…
