Dan Abel’s review published on Letterboxd:
Eighty-five years after a strange series of events occurred at the Broussard Mansion, Angela throws a Halloween party on it's grounds. It doesn't take long for the police to break it up and kick out all of the party goers, leaving a core group of friends behind. When they finally decide to go home they realize that the gates are locked and they are trapped for the night on the cursed estate with seven demons who aim to possess seven people and usher in the end of the world as we know it.
Night of the Demons is a 2009 remake of the 1988 cult classic film of the same name. Oh boy.
I haven't seen any of the sequels to the original franchise of Night of the Demons films but I watched the original last night and I tend to prefer to watch remakes immediately after so I decided to tackle this before those sequels. The way this version is shot sort of resembles the way that late 1990s-early 2000s Dark Castle Entertainment films like Thi3teen Ghosts and the House on Haunted Hill remake were shot. I am a sucker for that stuff and in some ways the same approach worked on me here even if at times this film feels like it tries too hard to be "edgy" on a cringe level.
The personification of career decline Edward Furlong and Shannon Elizabeth headline the cast and the acting is far better than it's source material. In fact, I was pretty happy with Furlong's work in the role. We get a cameo from legendary 1980s horror queen herself Linnea Quigley, who starred in the original film and sports her ballerina costume and classic bend over moment. Excellent fan service for those who remember. The guy trying to explain the new churched up lipstick scene was pretty funny but this film avoids the over-the-top attempts to inject humor for the most part. That's always a welcomed change for me. The FX are hit and miss with the CGI being pretty bad and practical very well done but they aren't quite on the level of Steven Johnson's work in the first film. I can live with that.
Overall the Night of the Demons remake was flawed and a bit too cringe at parts but I still thought is was a serviceable remake that is definitely worth a watch, especially for fans of the original. Check it out.
