I didn't really had that much expectations for this if you asked me about a year ago. For some reason the closer it got to the release the more exciting I was getting. I think at one point I was more curious to see what James Cameron is going to bring to the table with this rather than just wanting to actually watch it.
Cameron doesn't really do anything new in terms of the story. I don't think he even needs to. At least now for now with what this movie aims to do. Just like Avatar, Avatar 2 goes for the experience. It doesn't matter if the story is predictable. It doesn't reduce the enjoyment here. We all know that they will get into a massive fight at the end. What's really amazing is how this movie does not let you even think about the story because it looks so amazing. I mean every single scene just looked out of this world. I couldn't even think about the story because I wanted to simply experience this. All the underwater scenes are breath-taking and they made me feel like a kid. It just gave me that simple pure enjoyment, in the same way The Fabelmans did.
I'm not going to go on and on about how amazing this looks because if you watched it you should know. However, it's amazing how such a simple story can be so powerful if done right. I think that's what James Cameron has always been about so I don't get why people are putting both Avatars down because of it. All his stories are always full of clichés but they feel so good because he knows how to do them.
This one is better than original. I think just as a film itself it does a better job at pretty much all aspects. The characters are much more interesting, the story seems a little bit more engaging, the pacing is better etc. Obviously it looks better, that's to be expected. I think the high frame rate is amazing and it makes this feel almost too smooth. I do not like how it certain scenes it switched back between 24 and 48. It was the only thing that took me out of the experience. I loved the underwater and night scenes. I hope future parts do more of night stuff and elements. I don't really see how they will manage to look better aesthetically than water. I mean this is the wettest water I have ever seen. I loved Kiri and all the foreshadowing with her. I have trust in Cameron that he will pull out some amazing concepts with her in Pandora (maybe that's why apparently Avatar 4 script had reactions of 'what the fuck'). This is definitely just a massive build up and it's so good at it.
I didn't expect the older son to die I have to say. My money was on the mother as she had really limited screen time and I thought they would kill her here and focus on Jake and all the other kids with him sacrificing in the next one. It looks like Kiri and the younger brother will be the highlight for next few films.
Also, thank you Big J. for not including as much humans into this as much as in the first one. I hated looking at normal world in the first one and the less we see of it the better. It looks so bland, at least comparing it to Pandora. If we ever see the Earth in this universe I hope it has some flavour to it because I will not sit and watch a movie full blandness like all human parts have in this and the original. I appreciate them here (and in the first one to an extend), I think it adds to the experience and makes Pandora looks much nicer but I don't want a full movie of it.
