Similar to Samurai Rebellion this is Kobayashi’s complete condemnation of both the samurai code and the Tokugawa regime. A masterfully crafted story, with an exquisite structure that is so so effective in allowing the narrative to unfold piece by piece. God the lighting and composition are just awesome. And Tatsuya Nakadai. Tatsuya Nakadai.

This is a truly uncomfortable and often horrifying film, masterly engineered by Cassavetes. Phenomenal performances from the three, just incredible. They so effectively translate the characters' naivety towards the unsettling nature of their actions that it becomes extremely difficult to watch. Cassavetes might be the most human director going; he is able to encapsulate the highs and lows of human emotion with extreme precision. Not sure how soon I will want to revisit this.

"Scientists... may be smart... but so many of them are completely deaf to the beating of nature's heart. They work so hard inventing things that make people unhappy."

Truly inexplicable beauty. Like how do you make something look like that??? Why does this look better than like every other film ever??? The procession in the final vignette almost brought me to a tear. Never thought one of my favourite aspects of a Kurosawa film would be the dance choreography. Truly magical shit!
