Alien: Romulus

Alien: Romulus

Álvarez once again pays tribute to influential IP with a hodgepodge of franchise in-borrowing and generally singular competence, a derelict crew - dad jokey, aging synthetic in tow - getting their respective anatomies pummeled when they aren't questioning shifty Weyland-Yutani directives involving whatever bioweapon. Sports all of the tatty techno tactility of the original while speed dashing through a handful of dumpy, requisite lore bits to reveal some impressive, alien scourge-centric immensity, facehuggers given a stage comparable in size to their xenomorph brethren's as they tirelessly swarm about to form nothing short of an aggressively harrowing infestation. Forced survivalism in the hunter(s) vs. the hunted arena yields some decent, appropriately panicky set piece bravado but the whole package is essentially just a means for Álvarez and Co. to play with their toys and join the back of the medium's ever-lengthening fan service conga line.
