Jon C.’s review published on Letterboxd:
Full disclosure — I am extremely, notoriously picky when it comes to found footage. But goddamned if Frogman wasn’t a pleasant surprise! It deftly avoids some of the most common tropes of the genre, and effectively incorporates others into its narrative. Though this movie never claims to be Lovecraftian (which, much like Lynchian, is an overused and often incorrectly applied adjective), it certainly feels that way, with its tale of small towns, strange cults, and inhuman creatures breeding with some of the less fortunate townsfolk.
It appears that Frogman does, in fact, fuck.
Edit: Watching some of the bonus features from the Terror Vision Blu-ray, and the director specifically mentions the Lovecraft story “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” — so even if this isn’t frequently being touted as a “Lovecraftian” movie, it certainly is, and that influence is intentional.
