In the Loop

With a General Election on the horizon for us here in the UK, the time felt right to revisit and enjoy the governmental stylings of Armando Iannucci. Starring a cross-section of Anglo-American comedy titans, we have the likes of James Gandolfini and David Rasche bringing their own brand of satire onboard with Iannucci's The Thick Of It regulars in an hilarious black comedy that riffs on the build-up to a coalition invasion in the Middle East. Stellar turns from Tom Hollander, Chris Addison, Gina McKee, and the mercurial Peter Capaldi make this a quotable, laugh out loud satire that mimics the working chaos that goes on behind the scenes of a government department. Capaldi is a force of nature, much as he was in the television series, only with even more swearing, and credit must also be given to actor Paul Higgins who plays Jamie McDonald, "the crossest man in Scotland" ,for bringing abusive language to a new level. Gandolfini's presence here does make me smile, but boy does it make me sad too, gone far too soon, a terrific actor with talent to burn. Wouldn't mind a one-off election special featuring some of these characters, it would brighten up this election campaigning bandwagon rather nicely.
