Emotional background that could had dig bigger. The density that “Luto” contained consumed me to the point of feeling uncomfortable and kind of sleepy, the heaviness is so flagrant and overall the plot is so linear that it can feel at times so flat since it lacks dynamic and the claw to elevate the nature of the film, to be more specific it adresses the search of trying to figure it out your life trying to battle all the demons and trying to understand why people have to go, why our love ones suddenly die, and is such a life basis struggle that is so bittersweet and challenging, but frankly I just wanted to felt it more deeply since is overall submerged on this lugubrious aura and for me personally it felt short on that area, I don’t think it was visceral enough as maybe the purpose it was trying to offer to us. I don’t think it was necessary for this film to be almost two hours long, and you can tell that the director focused a lot on the cinematography rather that to give a more coherent storyline. The faster I grow as a cinema enthusiast the more a disjointed fluidity bothers me, that is when you can notice the lack of experience and polished structures as is a bomb of information that yeah it was enriching and interesting at some points however that also kind of obstruct the rhythm of the situations. Once again visually is stunning, the landscapes were absolutely striking and it was such a heartwarming adventure on that sense, the camera work was so lively but imagine if that vision was portrayed more on the action of the story, that would had been even more captivating. I thought the acting was great, not spectacular but pretty solid, they were some scenes that totally had my heart aching nonetheless I had a hard time to have empathy with what I was witnessing since the sorrow and addressing of problems felt more internal and hidden between the characters but it wasn’t powerful enough to make me cry or scream and be on this profound lamentation. Overall I must admit that I haven’t watch a Mexican film in a long time so it was nice to see a project represented on my roots, I must confess that since Mexican cinema lately is so commercial I had lost interest on watching the films that come to the Theathers. With that being said, “Luto” is decent, the ending was beautiful and like I mentioned it had a lot of lovely and heart wrenching moments since as we know duels doesn’t have a day of expiration or a exact time of overcoming. Curiously enough I watch it on Dia De Los Muertos so I was feeling so nostalgic and kind of sad all day long and is not like I hated this film but I can’t deny that it descended my mood into almost feeling a rock surrounded on pain, almost falling from a cliff into the uncertainty of life.
