  A sprawling film with performances from some of my favorites (John Hurt, Christopher Walken, and as a bonus, Jeff Bridges in his hunk era). I love that the camera's soft focus doesn't let you forget that you're looking at the late 1800s West through the lens of the late 1970s (tbh I would take one of these moody revisionist Westerns any day above a John Ford Western).

  Also, true: I absolutely hate that it includes an actual cockfight. Unnecessary, ugly, and cruel.

  JACK'S BACK is a celluloid fever dream of Echo Park in the 80s. This shadowy noir might be thinly threaded together, but it's a love letter to the now-deceased neon gods of LA (plus.....sexy saxaphone and James Spader in his underwear!).
