In the Cut

I haven’t seen this since 2005. I do remember the controversy surrounding Meg Ryan’s portrayal and that it derailed her career, but mainly I was bored and I fell asleep.

I liked it a whole lot more this time, but it’s still pretty slow. The central relationship is fascinating and tender beneath the rough surface. I just love the visual specificity of Campion’s storytelling.

Overall, this is a slow, interior film full of melancholy and misery. While I see it as quite a brilliant film, it’s just not very enjoyable to watch.
