I wrote a song dedicated to THIS New York. It’s called “Take Me To Detroit”.

“I miss New York, the good old days are long past. The party ended as soon as the streets were cleared of the trash…there’s nothing left here to destroy, so take me to Detroit.”

So wonderfully gritty and perfectly portrayed in this film.

Just had the pleasure of rewatching this on 35mm at The Roxy in NYC. It’s as awesome as ever- the lighting, choreography, and oh my god Jennifer Beals!

It’s no exaggeration to say this soundtrack had a profound and lasting impact on my life as a songwriter and musician. Moroder was on another level as a pop maestro.

Edit: Went down the rabbit hole on the soundtrack and found out how horribly the beautiful and talented Irene Cara (singer-songwriter of What A Feeling) was treated by the music industry. Totally unsurprising, but shameful and sad nonetheless. RIP Irene, you deserved so much better.

The tv series (excluding season 6 and 7 where it completely goes downhill) is one of the top television dramas of all time. Completely revolutionary in hindsight, although I didn’t catch it the first time it aired, but obviously there would be no Sopranos or The Wire without Homicide.

The movie was great because it brought back all the characters I loved from the first few seasons and left me with that profound, bleak and depressing gut ache I came to expect and love from characters like Bayliss and Pembleton.

An extra half star just for Catherine Deneuve’s perfect hair.
