Since he’s not credited on Letterboxd, might as well give praise to the colorist for the Minus One Minus Color variant, Masahiro Ishiyama. Watching this version is the go to, for it looks gorgeous. It harkens back to the original 1954 film while mixing in modern visual effects, that are far more superior compared to the more Americanized Godzilla films.
For once, these characters are much more fleshed out and you root for their triumphant success rather than just impatiently waiting to get to the fireworks factory aka Godzilla. There’s actual stakes at hand.
This film tackles a very dark, very grim plotline that follows a kamikaze pilot living with survivor’s guilt, and in the middle of his internal struggle is Godzilla.
What Godzilla represents is bleak and depressing, and the lack of color reflects that. If there is one complaint, it’s that there is a cop out, but as someone who has experienced horrible miracles before, Koishi deserved a second chance at life.
Aside, there’s just way too much to praise, like the SOOUND OOH MY GOOODD!! WHY IS THERE BARELY ANYONE WATCHING THIS MOVIE GO WATCH IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR GET OUTTA HERE!!
