Notting Hill

Notting Hill

"Happiness isn't happiness without a violin-playing goat."

Best passage of time montage ever? It just might be — and done in camera no less!

There's an undeniable chemistry between Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant at the heart of this film that absolutely makes it work and even more so than Four Weddings and a Funeral did. Even though I'm sure I've seen it once years ago, it felt like watching it for the first time today and there's a lot of heartwarming energy in this and among the entire cast, comprising the inner circle of friends of Grant's bookshop owner and it was just a really good time seeing them spending their time together.

It's also a fascinatingly honest and raw film on many occasions and while it has the expected drama moments with protracted resolutions, it also paints an endearing picture of someone who is famous around the world but is actually just a person behind all that façade. It doesn't hurt that the sex tape scare and the realization that every newspaper article about it will be filed and stored away has taken on an exponentially worse role in today's 24/7 "news" cycle with every bit of data about everyone floating around out there forever saved, if not in its original form than as a copy of a copy of a screenshot of a copy.
