Is it strange that I almost cried at a W.A.V.E. film?

Before Suicide Club and We're All Going to the World's Fair tackled the intermingling of mental illness with the internet's unceasing signalling and the self-induced surveillance of modern existence, Tina Krause, Gary Whitson, and the W.A.V.E. crew delivered this. An SOV fetish film about a lesbian couple where one, Jennifer, a recently released from the psych ward schizophrenic, attempts to get revenge by inviting a reality TV crew to…

Is there room in modern love for love?

A story of building blocks of people, drenched in primary colors and black & white, who bar themselves from the true moments of living each strives for. Alex, bathed in pure yellow, runs from a blue Lise whose face is already blurred with the mark of memory, ruining any chance of once again reaching the green of their moments together loving in the forest. Alex beats himself for this, only to beat himself…

I really wanted to like this film. I'm a huge fan of Schoenbrun's debut We're All Going to the World's Fair and I love seeing trans directors being allowed to make explicitly trans films that get wide releases, but this just left such a bad taste in my mouth. It's not that I don't get it, in fact I practically lived this film. My deadname is Owen, I spent much of my childhood coping through media, my girl friends were…

This brought back all the worst memories. Like last year's Anne at 13,000ft, this film destroyed me with how close to home it hit. Being a lonely and depressed preteen whose only escape was the internet, getting way too invested in unhealthy obsession and talking to adults who should've actually helped instead of instigating, and then ending up in psychiatric care as you hit the bottom. That was my life at one point too. Cried a river when the credits hit. A really unique film and possibly the only one to really understand being online as a sad young person. Impeccable.
